KIRCO MANIX recently completed an addition for Akebono at the Akebono Engineering Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan. The expansion consisted of an 11,000 sq. ft. research and development area with an exterior evaluation track and rework of the parking areas. The Akebono project is a recent example of the long standing tradition of former clients returning to KIRCO MANIX for their most current construction needs.
Sustainability features of the expansion include:
- Solar Array Panels
- Motion sensor lighting
- Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) of the existing parking lot
The 15KV solar array shown in the photo to the above right is used in a passive solar application that saves on heating and cooling costs while creating a higher level of occupant comfort. This system decreases the buildings air conditioning load by shading the summer sun and allowing the winter sun in for passive heating. Over the course of a year it will produce over 20,000 KWh and has a 25 year warranty.
Another energy saving feature included the installation of motion sensor lights with T8 lamps.
The rework of the asphalt parking lot was done using the Full Depth Reclamation process (FDR). FDR eliminates the need for undercuts and re-uses the existing materials while providing a more stable subgrade and longer wear on the parking lot. By using the on-site FDR process, all material is reclaimed and used in the new parking area in a way never before seen in the Detroit Market.
This expansion project strongly demonstrates Akebono's commitment to environmental stewardship and to Michigan. KIRCO MANIX and Akebono take great pride in this project and would like to thank our team on a “Best-in-Class” project.
